As a local Austin company, part of our mission statement is to enrich the community by promoting localism and inspiring people to patronize area businesses. Many Purple Fig customers believe that a home cleaned the natural way is healthier than a home cleaned with toxic chemicals. We believe that many of these same customers also subscribe to the belief that locally sourced food is just better for you. This is why we want to support great events in Austin like Eat Drink Local Week.

December 6th through December 13th is Edible Austin Eat Drink Local Week. The goal of this week is to encourage Austinites to support locally sourcing restaurants and cook meals throughout the week made entirely from local ingredients. Edible Austin will be hosting several events at area farmers markets to promote home cooking.

Other events will benefit the Sustainable Food Center and Urban Roots. The Sustainable Food Center serves Austin by increasing access to healthy, local food. This organization hosts organic gardening classes, sponsors community gardens and goes in to local schools to help educate youth about nutrition. Urban Roots provides paid internships for Austin teens to work on a sustainable urban farm in East Austin.

These deserving nonprofits will benefit from a special event held by Edible Austin on Monday, December 8th, an Evening with Dan Barber. Barber, a multiple-times winner of the James Beard award, is a chef and published author who promotes food sustainability and supports the farm to table movement and beyond. At this event, he will speak about his new book, “The Third Plate,” while attendees can also enjoy music by Michael Fracasso. There will also be a book signing sponsored by BookPeople and a pop-up farmers market. Participating restaurants at chefs at the VIP Reception include: Hoover Alexander of Hoover’s Cooking, Todd Duplechan of Lenoir, Brandon Fuller from Cafe Josie and Jesse Griffiths from Dai Due.

We want to do our part to support the Sustainable Food Center, Urban Roots and Eat Drink Local Week, so we donated 150 bottles of our all-natural homemade cleaner and a $20 off coupon to be given away to every VIP ticket holder. If you are attending this event, thank you for helping to champion the local movement. If you can’t attend an Evening with Dan Barber, please consider going to one of the other Edible Austin Eat Drink Local Week events!
